Organization of training and education in the military academy of the republic of belarus

The Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus was established by the President of the Republic of Belarus by the amalgamation of 2 military colleges in 1995. There are the Military Air Defense College, its history began in 1953 and the Military Combined Arms College, established in 1980.
Nowadays the Military Academy is a leading educational establishment, a methodological and scientific center in the military educational system, where officers are trained in major military specialties.
The main purpose of the Academy include:
Officers’ Training for the Armed Forces, Internal Troops and State Frontier Committee;
Scientific Research, preparation of scientists and teaching staff in the sphere of the national military security;
Officer Short-time Advanced Training and Refresher Training courses, including training on new types of armaments and military equipment.
Educational activities in the Military academy include:
pre-university training;
higher education;
post-university education;
and complementary education.
Officer training is carried out at 2 stages of higher education:
First academic degree is Bachelor of Science (licentiate);
Second academic degree is Master of Science.
The training of Bachelors of Science (first academic degree) is performed for 3 levels of troops control:
1. TACTICAL CONTROL LEVEL. The category of trainees is a cadet. The period of training is 4-5 years, (depending on the specialty). Graduates are lieutenants, assigned to the service in troops on positions of platoon-company-battalion.
Having obtained general experience of units control at battalion level, the officer of the rank of “captain”, “major” or “lieutenant colonel” can proceed with further training at the second level.
2. OPERATIONAL-TACTICAL CONTROL LEVEL. The category of trainees is a “captain”, “major” or “lieutenant colonel”. The period of training is 2 years. Graduates become brigade level officers.
Having obtained general experience of brigade control, the officer in the rank of a “colonel” can proceed with further training at the third level.
3. OPERATIONAL-STRATEGIC CONTROL LEVEL. The category of trainees is a “colonel”. The period of training is 2 years. Graduates become operational-strategic level officers.
Thus, appointment to different positions and units precedes each following level transition. The process of continuous military education is carried out during the full term of being in the military service.
Masters of Science are trained at the second stage of the higher education. The training of Masters of Science is related to the training of scientists. Those officers, who served in the troops, as well as graduates from the academy (lieutenants), who showed their disposition to scientific work, are trained in the magistracy. Full-time training in the magistracy lasts for 1 year.
After attendees defend master’s thesis and receive the Master of Science degree, officers can continue their training postgraduate course, and then in the doctorate, where they can defend the first candidate’s academic degree. Some years later they can get the second academic degree – the Doctor of Science. Each period is 3 years (correspondence course is 4 years).
The Academy structure includes:

  • academy administration;
  • faculties and chairs;
  • all-academic chairs;
  • scientific and research department;
  • Training support center.
